Al Dixon recommends Valerie Ellis

Al Dixon (avd3@uga.edu)

To the scholarship committee: I am writing to recommend Valerie Ellis for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. Valerie is in my English 1102 class at the University of Georgia. She’s a great student with a positive attitude. She is one of the most vocal participants in class discussions. We spend a lot of time discussing literature in class, and Valerie sets a good example by offering thoughtful analysis. She puts a lot of work into her peer reviews, which shows an interest in helping her fellow students succeed. I count on students like Valerie. She makes the class better for everyone. Valerie comes to class prepared. She completes the homework assignments on time. Her work shows great academic potential. Her first paper was quite creative, thoughtful, and well-written. Valerie is driven to be a great student and citizen of the classroom. I’ve enjoyed having her in my class, and I’m confident she will be a worthy recipient of your scholarship. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like further comments. Al Dixon English Instructor University of Georgia avd3@uga.edu

Greg Marr (Gregory.Marr@gcpsk12.org)

September 19, 2024 To Whom It May Concern: I would like to recommend Ms. Valerie Ellis for Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarships and/or Programs. I have known Valerie for the past two years. She was in my AP Physics 1 class her Junior year of high school, and scored a “4” on the exam in May. Her Senior year she continued to do the things that made her successful the previous year, but in my AP Physics with calculus course. Valerie is a great problem solver, but is not shy when it comes to asking for help with something she does not understand. She is a good advocate for her own learning, something many her age struggle to manage. She is also adept at changing course when something she is doing is not working. She is teachable and knows she does not know it all already. In a class of 30 highly talented students, Valerie stood out for her positivity, work ethic, and calm demeanor. She is never too high or too low. She is not grade-driven, but rather learning focused. Outside of class, Valerie was an AP Scholar with Distinction. She was a community advocate as well, participating in many school and national honor societies that benefited others through her volunteerism and fundraising. Having gotten to know Valerie through our weekly chats, I know how passionate she is about theater. She enjoys acting and does so through a local company. She is a pet lover and has rescued several dogs, having recently lost one to old age, but welcomed a new puppy and all of the joys/concerns that come with it. Valerie is interested in a career in STEM and can definitely reach that goal. I recommend Valerie Ellis, without reservation. Sincerely, Mr. Greg Marr AP Physics instructor, MCHS

Terrence Banks (Terrence-banks@utc.edu)

It is with great pleasure that write to you this letter of recommendation for Riley Burdette. I have known Riley for over 3 years and in that time, I’ve seen her grow as an athlete, as a scholar, and as a person. From the athlete perspective, I have seen her take on obstacles that most adults would shy away from. I mention this because it’s important to understand that Riley is a fighter; even when she had tough Olympics lift practice or when she would face off against more experienced opponents. Her ability to push through PR’s or on the field injuries is a true example of how determined this young lady is. From the scholar perspective, you are looking at a student who continuously shows up to learn. From our first encounters GT, Engineering, and rollercoasters were a reoccurring conversation. When a student is this driven and determined at an early age it is nearly impossible to derail that type of forward of thinking. She graduated at the top of her class, she got into the school of her dream, and she is pursuing her dream job. From the perspective of being human, she has talked to me about the things she was once down on herself about and I’ve watched her make decisions to overcome those challenges. Additionally, she has volunteered numerous hours at our Gym working with Parkison’s patients. So not only is Riley driven and motivated by personal goals but she also takes the time out of her busy life to care for others. I have never had a negative interaction with Riley and neither will you nor the GA Engineering Foundation. I understand that athletes aren’t rare, I know that smart athletes are not rare, and I understand smart, kind-hearted athletes are not rare. But what is rare is Riley Burdette. I can promise you that she is a one of a kind human being. We need more students, more woman that are like Riley. I could go on and on praising Riley and the work she has done but I will leave you with this notion. If we are not focused on the future then we are failing. If we don’t put women like Riley in positions to be successful and to be seen then we are failing. When you think of “ROI” Return on investments, investing in Riley will yield nothing but positive returns. Terrence Banks Assoc. Director of Recruitment University of Tn at Chattanooga Terrence-banks@utc.edu

Jake Pullen (jpullen.rhs@catoosa.k12.ga.us)

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing this letter to recommend Riley Burdette for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. As Riley’s teacher and tennis coach for multiple years in high school, I had the privilege of witnessing her exceptional qualities both in the classroom and on the court. Riley was an intelligent, driven, and compassionate student who demonstrated an impressive commitment to her academic and extracurricular pursuits. Riley's commitment to her education was clear throughout the three years I taught her in math. Her relentless drive for academic excellence earned her the title of valedictorian, a goal she pursued with focus and determination. Riley consistently sought to not only master material but deeply understand it, often going beyond expectations. Her perseverance, curiosity, and disciplined work ethic, balanced with her extracurricular commitments, are truly inspiring. I am confident this dedication will continue to serve her well in all her future endeavors. Outside the classroom, I have had the pleasure of coaching Riley in tennis for four years. When she first joined the team, she had no prior experience in the sport, having focused on softball in her younger years. However, Riley's determination to improve was remarkable. Every day at practice, she sought to learn something new, always striving to perfect her technique. Even during her senior year, she continuously asked for feedback and took critiques well, using them to drive her growth. Riley’s ability to take constructive criticism, even when it was tough, and turn it into motivation to improve is a rare and admirable quality. Riley was highly involved in leadership roles during her time at Ringgold High School. She served as Vice President of the National Honor Society and Vice President of the Environmental Club where she took on significant responsibilities, organized multiple school- wide events, and inspired her peers to take part in meaningful activities within the school and the community. Additionally, Riley was an active member of Beta Club, where her dedication to service in the community was clear. Her ability to balance her academic responsibilities with her extracurricular commitments speaks to her impressive time management and leadership skills In closing, I strongly recommend Riley Burdette for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. Her character, leadership, and commitment to improving her school and community make her an outstanding candidate. I have no doubt that she will represent the scholarship and the field of engineering with the same excellence, integrity, and determination that she has shown throughout her academic career. Sincerely, Jake Pullen Math Teacher Ringgold High School

Donald Keen (donald_keen@dekalbschoolsga.org)

Dear Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship Committee, I had the pleasure of teaching Alton Mamaghani in Finance, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship over the course of his 11th and 12th grade years in high school. Alton’s GPA and AP course load speak for themselves, but the two things that I love the most about Alton are his creativity and his maturity. Alton puts his heart into everything he does, always thinking critically about his end goal and seeking out creative solutions. I remember Alton not only for the great questions he asks, but also for the quality of his work. For our capstone project, Alton made a lasting impression with his final pitch to our guest judges. For their “brand extension”, his group brought to life the idea of Levis camping gear in a way that was equally memorable and impressive. Whether it was the small business he ran throughout high school or a group project, Alton always put his heart into everything he does. Alton is creative, mature beyond his years, and has an incredible curiosity for learning. He has continually demonstrated these qualities to me over the two years I have known him, and I often hear the same words used to describe him around the community. I highly recommend Alton for your Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at donald_keen@dekalbschoolsga.org. Sincerely, Donald Keen Teacher, Dunwoody High School

Brett Mayhan (brett.mayhan@gcpsk12.org)

To whom it may concern: My name is Brett Mayhan, and I am a teacher at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology. I am writing now to offer my recommendation for Areeba Basaria in her application for the Georgia Engineering Foundation scholarship. Miss Basaria has proven herself to be a diligent and talented student as well as a community leader, and I wholeheartedly endorse her for this award. I have known Miss Basaria since the Fall semester of 2021, when she was a student in my World Literature class. Amiable and extroverted, Miss Basaria quickly established herself as a leader in the classroom, actively participating in classroom discussions and leading small-group activities. I observed her developing fluency in analytical reading and argumentative writing, and she conferred with me frequently regarding her academic progress as well as her struggles. It was also during this time that Miss Basaria was experiencing success in our school's science fair, in which her project won second place (a significant achievement at a school like ours). Miss Basaria's academic and leadership achievements continued throughout her high-school career. She was nominated for the Governor's Honors Program for both Art and Biology, and she was selected for the Emory University Pre-College Program. She was an active member of several organizations at our high school, including two national honor societies, and she was elected vice president of our student council, an important and prestigious organization at our school. Even though I did not teach Miss Basaria again after her sophomore year, she stayed in touch with me regularly and kept me informed of her interests, activities, and achievements at school. It was through these updates that I learned of how her leadership extended beyond the school, as she served as a peer leader in her religious community. Miss Basaria has demonstrated interest, aptitude, and achievement in a variety of subject areas, and now that she has selected engineering as an academic and career focus, I am confident that she will meet and exceed the expectations of the Georgia Engineering Foundation. I confidently recommend Areeba Basaria for this scholarship. Sincerely, Brett Mayhan, Ph.D.
