Claudia Canovas is a student in my Fall 2024 ENGL 1102 course, “Global Texts and the Environment,” at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This class helps students develop research methodologies, critical thinking habits, and multimodal communication skills. Claudia has been receiving one of the highest grades in the class. However, beyond grades, Claudia’s contributions have been much more impactful and transparent in how she demonstrates 1) individual skills, such as critical and analytical thinking, and 2) empathetic leadership, that is, leading with a willingness to listen to her peers patiently. For instance, when her team struggled to progress on their group research project, Claudia went above and beyond to ensure it was completed on time. In class, she presented evidence-backed arguments across multimodal platforms, showing her audience awareness and strategic use of communication. She not only encourages others to share and develop their ideas, significantly enhancing the final product's quality, but also does so with a sense of empathy and understanding. These instances showcase Claudia's ability to merge her scientific and analytical mindset with leadership and communication principles, and her empathetic nature and support for her peers, which will undoubtedly inspire and support others in the engineering community. Through projects in my class, Claudia improved her multimodal communication skills, specifically writing, video editing, PowerPoint creation, public speaking, teamwork dynamics, and collaborative problem-solving. This class has also helped her become a better researcher and make evidence-backed arguments about any topic, from biotechnological research to rhetorical analysis. Although she is studying to become an engineer, she understands that these communication and collaboration skills are essential in any industry. Through this class and her years of schooling and extracurriculars, she can express her ideas and projects clearly and engagingly across multiple formats to different audiences. Furthermore, Claudia’s dedication, willingness to receive constructive criticism, and work ethic ensured a clear development arc between initial ideas and final drafts. This proves her ability to self-evaluate her work, while her willingness to learn on the job sets her apart. Thus, while Claudia began my course with research and communication fundamentals, she has also shown significant improvement. With these core skills and abilities—critical, analytical, and communication skills—Claudia can become a key part of the GEF organization’s engineering societies and associate member organizations. The support of the Georgia Engineering Foundation (GEF) Scholarship will be instrumental in realizing this potential impact. At the same time, Claudia’s capacity for excellence could be disrupted by two obstacles: 1) The absence of an academic and professional support system and 2) Financial concerns and obligations. The Georgia Engineering Foundation (GEF) Scholarship will allow her to focus on her work, while the mentorship will provide Claudia with the tools and guidance to grow professionally and personally. More importantly, your guidance will build Claudia’s confidence, allow her to empathize with and lead future students facing similar challenges in pursuing academic excellence, and contribute to the GEF’s mission of improving engineering education in Georgia. Moinak Choudhury Assistant Director, Writing and Communication Program, Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellow, Georgia Institute of Technology

This letter is to acknowledge an amazing young man that I met 2 years ago at church. He's very bright, intelligent, engaging, loveable, dedicated, and BOLD! "Pla," as we fondly call him at church, is active in several areas, in our church: Pathfinders (Christian Boy scouts), Media (Managing sound and video), deacon, and others. He came to the U.S. not knowing how to speak English. But now, you wouldn't be able to tell. In addition, he had interned for my business, Phedamenon, LLC., as a web services intern and demonstrated high level skills for a high school seniors. I believe anything that can be done to help Placentz Enaillo to succeed is a blessing and very welcome. He will not disappoint! If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at my email: jlaurent@phedamenon.com or phone: 770-875-8810.
To whom it may concern: I highly recommend Claudia Canovas for the Georgia Engineering Foundation scholarship. In the two years I taught her in IBDP Biology, she proved herself to be a talented student who set ambitious goals and followed through with her plans to achieve those goals. Claudia demonstrated an excellent understanding of biological theory and consistently performed at a level sufficient to earn the highest mark on exams. In particular she stood out in her engagement with lessons–Claudia was a consistent contributor of both questions and solutions to questions posed to the class, and her contributions improved the class as a whole. She was also very caring to her classmates, and when she noticed someone struggling she was willing to help by proposing ideas or strategies that they could try. In practical work, Claudia was a careful and insightful researcher. She has a particular strength at identifying and troubleshooting aspects of her apparatus that may be causing unexpected behaviors in her experiment and identifying substantial improvements to address those weaknesses--a skill that most students her age struggle with. Based on these qualities, I highly recommend Claudia to receive the Georgia Engineering Foundation scholarship. If you have any questions about Claudia as a student, please email me at the address below. Sincerely, Luke Templer DP Biology Teacher Atlanta International School luke.templer@aischool.org

Monica Dorner 360 Jenkins Rd. Tyrone, GA 30290 (770-969-2850) dorner.monica@fcboe.org 21 September 2023 To Whom it May Concern, This letter comes to you on behalf of Noa Lomba, one of the most accomplished and motivated seniors in the Sandy Creek High School class of 2024. I came to know Ms. Lomba when she was in my AP English Language and Composition class as a junior. During her time in my class, Ms. Lomba distinguished herself as a diligent and committed student with an ambition for success and the drive to achieve. As a result of her ambition and commitment, Ms. Lomba earned an A in AP English Language and passed the AP English Language exam. In the AP English Language classroom, Ms. Lomba was a diligent student, but the last to arrive each day because English followed science, her first love. I accepted her dedication to science because once she arrived in English, she committed herself completely to the cause. In discussions, Ms. Lomba would offer insightful observations and informed comments. She enjoyed our debates and contributed to them enthusiastically. As a classmate, she would encourage less engaged students to participate and help them when she could. As an English student, Ms. Lomba reads difficult texts with determination, and she works diligently to improve her writing. As a writer, Ms. Lomba is both accomplished, insightful, mature, and proactive. She is the first and only student, in my more than twenty years of teaching, who has completed all of her college application essays during her junior year. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Lomba is a well-rounded student leader. In addition to taking gifted, honors, and AP classes throughout her high school career, Ms. Lomba has established herself extracurricularly as well. She is the president of both the Beta Club and National Honor Society. She was a finalist for the Governor’s Honors Program in Science. She runs on our cross country team, where she serves as the co-captain, and where she has earned numerous recognitions for her contributions to her team and sport. She was a region winner and state finalist for National History Day. She even serves as a peer tutor. As a result of the aforementioned and many more unmentioned accolades and successes, Ms. Lomba is an asset to her school not only academically but also as a student leader. Beyond the school, Ms. Lomba is an engaged community member. She has been involved with the Pathfinder program for over four years as a teen leader and deputy in training. She takes pride in this pursuit because being a mentor has taught her to be a better listener and more empathetic to people whose circumstances are different from her own. And even though Pathfinders is a significant time commitment, Ms. Lomba has also found time to volunteer at the Midwest Food Pantry, where she has served over 288 hours making food packages, delivering food to people’s homes, and helping feed the community on Thanksgiving and Christmans holidays. In addition to her work at the food pantry, Ms. Lomba has also given time to help with community clean-up. And she has volunteered time with both Toys for Tots and the Royal Animal Refuge. Furthermore, when she isn’t volunteering or mentoring, Ms. Lomba maintains her own science blog where she writes about the latest scientific discoveries and inventions. With all of her qualities and commitments, I am confident that Ms. Lomba will achieve her goal of becoming an aerospace engineer. She is a well-rounded, conscientious, hard-working student who knows what she wants and how to go about getting it. She is an articulate young person who represents herself, her family, and her school with the character of a concerned, contributing citizen. In closing, I give this accomplished and inspirational young woman my highest recommendation. She will be an asset to any institution with which she chooses to associate herself, and she is an ideal candidate for the Ron Brown Program. Sincerely, Monica Dorner AP English Language English Department Chair
September 24, 2024 Letter of recommendation for Bonnie Houston To whom it may concern, Bonnie was an associate in our retail store Market on the Square since school started her senior year. Bonnie was responsible for customer service and maintaining operation of the store. Customer service is a larger part of her job, but her work in inventory, which keeps the store running smoothly, is also vital to its operation. She is highly competent, well organized, and excellent with communicating with customers. She keeps the store clean, stocked, and her excellent math skills are used daily. Bonnie has received many awards in Math and has spent countless hours in her volunteer rolls. These have helped her to use these skills with our customers. Our loss when she left for college in the fall was another organization gain. I highly recommend Bonnie. Should you wish to discuss my recommendation further, please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours truly, Regina O’Brian
