Melissa Combs recommends Calvin Washburn

Melissa Combs (mcombs@forsyth.k12.ga.us)

To whom it may concern, Calvin Washburn is an excellent candidate to receive the Georgia Engineering Foundation scholarship. He is a wonderful, well-rounded young man with a personality that simply lights up a room. I enjoyed teaching Calvin in my Advanced Placement US History class. He is a determined student and a hard worker in class. His participation in class discussions showed preparation and a level of interest that is refreshing to see. He submitted quality assignments in a timely manner and took great pride in his work. Calvin took many AP courses while attending North Forsyth High School. By choosing to take a more rigorous course load, he has demonstrated a desire to succeed at a much higher level than most of his peers. Calvin was always willing to help other students learn the material and served as a peer mentor for our AP Writing Workshop. He was a great role model to other students and is admired by his teachers. What always impressed me was his innate ability to combine academics and extra-curricular activities while maintaining a friendly, approachable, demeanor to all students. His involvement in numerous activities and clubs has given him the opportunity to mentor underclassmen and relationships that allow him to serve as a positive influence on others. He was selected by his teachers to receive several awards that honor his determination and positive attitude. If I can be of any further assistance in your selection of Calvin for the Georgia Engineering Foundation scholarship, please do not hesitate to contact me at mcombs@forsyth.k12.ga.us or (770) 402-0725. Cristina Madera (cmm63298@uga.edu)

To whom it may concern, It is my pleasure to enthusiastically recommend Xinyang Lin, Alena, for a Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. My name is Cristina Madera, fifth year Electrical & Electronics Engineering student at the University of Georgia (UGA). I have had the pleasure of mentoring Alena since she was accepted into the Engineering Academic Boot Camp at UGA this past summer, where I worked as a Peer Mentor. Out of the fourteen students I mentored, Alena stuck out to me because of her strong desire to learn and be the best engineering student she can be, while maintaining her humility and authenticity. During our time together, Alena has proved to be a curious, diligent, and well rounded student. When working with others, she exhibits a level of maturity and thoughtfulness that is refreshing to see in a first year engineering student. It is apparent that she does not take her role as a student for granted, and prioritizes her success, not only in academics, but professionally as well. In the few months Alena has been at UGA, she has already gotten involved in several College of Engineering organizations. She has also taken the initiative to attend Career Fairs in search of internship opportunities, something few freshmen are already considering. I am confident without reservation that Alena is more than deserving of a GEF Scholarship. As a hardworking, genuine, and versatile individual, a GEF Scholarship will help Alena achieve success in the bright future I have no doubt is in front of her. Feel free to contact me at cmm63298@uga.edu if you have any questions or would like me to further elaborate on Alena’s talents and achievements. Cristina Madera

October 31, 2023 To Whom It May Concern, I am writing in recommendation of Evelyn Erickson. I have taught Evelyn for two academic years – one year of Chemistry, and she is currently in my AP Biology and Honors Physics classes. Evelyn is the kind of student that teachers love to teach. She loves learning and acquiring knowledge. She thinks deeply about the content and strives not only to learn and understand it, but also to apply it to other disciplines and life. Evelyn works hard, which is clearly reflected in her grades and transcript. Outside of the classroom, Evelyn is heavily involved in school activities. She has earned high honors for her high school career, is a member of the Beta Club and student government and has received multiple awards in Fine Arts at the State level. Outside of school, Evelyn is heavily involved in the community through work experience and community service. One of the interesting areas Evelyn has served is with one of our local adoption agencies. She worked on fundraising, helping new mothers and adoptive parents, and delivering supplies to families. This internship provided invaluable experience for her to meet and help people she might not have interacted with in her typical realm. She also has served the community through the animal shelter, local churches, and Rebuilding Macon which is an organization that helps paint homes and clean yards for the elderly or disabled in our city. Evelyn is a young woman who has chosen in her senior year to take the most challenging classes that our school offers. She is the only student in this year’s graduating class who has risen to that challenge. I have no doubt she will excel. I recommend Evelyn highly, without reservation. She would be an asset to any institution and highly deserving of scholarship. Sincerely, Amanda McGhee Department of Science

It is with great confidence that I make this recommendation, as I find Jacob to be a hardworking, intelligent young man with much to offer to the world around him. Jacob is a well-rounded individual, and I know that he will be successful in anything that he undertakes. I had the pleasure of teaching Jacob during his junior year while he was a student enrolled in my AP Calculus AB course. Jacob came to class each day with a positive attitude and a desire to learn. There was never any doubt about how much Jacob enjoyed math and he always took great pride in attempting challenging problems. Jacob was always quick to think critically of each topic introduced in the classroom and would seek opportunities that would require him to think divergently. He was never afraid to ask important questions that would enhance his understanding of the topic we were studying. Jacob always worked collaboratively with his classmates, volunteered to answer questions with confidence, and participated in group discussions. Jacob has proven himself to be very strong in his math abilities and is comfortable assisting his peers in the classroom. I am thankful for the opportunity that I have had to teach Jacob, and I know he will continue to thrive beyond the classroom setting. Through his high school course work, extracurricular activities, and various honors, Jacob has proven himself to be an exceptional student. To the Great Folks on the Selection Committee, Hey there! I hope y'all are doing well. I'm here as a parent, and let me tell ya, I'm pretty darn proud of my son, Nubayat Ahmed. He's got this engineering thing in his heart, and I truly believe your scholarship could be the ticket he needs to keep the dream alive. Nubayat, well, he's got this insatiable hunger for all things engineering. His school smarts? They're off the charts. He just doesn't stop when it comes to learning and studying. He's a regular Einstein, I tell ya. But what really makes Nubayat stand out is his heart. He don't just keep all that knowledge to himself. Nope, he's out there helping others too. He's been a computer science tutor, and he's spent hours teaching his buddies, sparking a real love for tech stuff in 'em. Now, you might wonder, what's this guy doing for a living? Well, he's in the IT world at Sumner Neurology. It's a pretty fancy title, but it's a high-pressure gig, with tech and patient care all mashed up together. But he's got a knack for it, and he sees how tech can make a real difference in healthcare. But here's the thing. All this book learnin' and helping folks out, it ain't cheap. As a parent, the bills add up fast. And that's where your scholarship comes in. It wouldn't just be a handout; it'd be like a lifeline, helping Nubayat reach for the stars. I'm begging you to look at Nubayat, not just as a scholarship application, but as a young fella who's got dreams bigger than the Georgia sky. Your scholarship wouldn't just be a check; it'd be a vote of confidence in a kid who's aiming to change the world. I'm always here if you wanna chat more about Nubayat and his love for engineering. Thanks for taking a gander at his application and for helping young engineers like him chase their dreams. Love, Nasim
