September 25, 2020 To Whom It May Concern, I am writing this letter of recommendation for Landon King, an undergraduate student majoring in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Georgia, for an academic scholarship. Landon was a student in two of my Honors STEM classes (Construction, Engineering, and Architecture in 2018-2019; STEM Senior Capstone in 2019-2020) at Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn, Georgia. I am the STEM Coordinator and Instructor at Providence, teaching high school STEM classes while supporting STEM classes in the Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. Landon is one of the best, quite possibly the best, student that I have had the pleasure to teach in three years at Providence and twelve years at Georgia Tech. He is extremely intelligent, inquisitive, well-spoken, out-going, and thoughtful. He is a leader who leads by example and encourages others. While at Providence, Landon took a rigorous academic schedule with AP and Honors classes in math and science along with challenging electives in STEM, finishing as the valedictorian of his class. While Landon was learning the material in each class, he was also exploring it and developing a deeper understanding, which I observed in class (e.g., as he was designing a commercial building in STEM and learning how to size and select beams to support the intended loads) and in discussions that we had last year about his Capstone internship at an engineering firm. While he wanted to learn and grow as a student and as a person during his internship, he was equally concerned about bringing value to the company that was willing to have him as an intern. Landon taught himself more details and techniques in Excel by building product comparison spreadsheets to aid engineers working with clients. He also increased his CAD skills by teaching himself to use SolidWorks (having learned Inventor in STEM) by modeling existing components. He is definitely a life-long learner. Landon was involved in numerous extracurricular activities at Providence that ranged from academics (Academic Team, Mu Alpha Theta – the math honor society, and National Honor Society) to service (Student Council, Axis – student led worship, Rush Conference at Perimeter Church) to athletics (Cross Country, Track and Field). For many of these activities, he was the leader or co-leader, especially as a senior. He has learned from older students and mentored younger students, being a positive role model and leading by example. He personally grew the cross-country team as the captain by reaching out to younger students to encourage them to train and run with the team. Landon is also a good speaker and is comfortable in front of a group of people, as demonstrated in his valedictorian speech at graduation and during his keynote talk at Perimeter Church’s Rush Conference this past summer. I was impressed with how at ease he was speaking to high school students at graduation and Rush while being streamed online to others, talking about his faith and beliefs. In summary, Landon King is an outstanding student and I highly recommend him. I anticipate that he will do quite well as an undergraduate student and, ultimately as a practicing engineer. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this, please contact me at 404-354-3593. Sincerely, Gregg D. Larson
