After 24 years as a public school educator, I have realized with every passing day that more than anything else in this world, it is kindness that really matters. I realize that is a cliché that seems out of place in an academic recommendation, but I hope it shows you why I am such a big fan of Rosalba Mazzotta—truly one of the kindest young people I have ever known. I honestly can’t think of anyone who went though our IB program—or through our entire school—who is more compassionate and caring for others than Rosie, and I am so happy to get to support her with a letter of recommendation as she completes this scholarship application process. To be sure, Rosie is a brilliant student, equally adept in history or math or science, always scoring at or near the top of her class. I was lucky enough to teach her last year in IB English, and her papers were the ones that I always saves for the very end of my grading, because I knew they would demonstrate not only technical expertise, but also charm and a genuine voice behind the words. She committed her time to numerous clubs and activities and went into all of them with equal gusto, from our Model United Nations team to her summer adventures as part of group of student sailors (!). Rosie is a fascinating and multilayered young woman who takes an interest in almost everything she does and—more importantly—everyone that she meets. She is genuinely fascinated by the people around her—she wants to know their stories and help them in any way she can, whether that means being part of a fundraising effort or just tutoring them in an academic subject. I got genuine joy from talking to Rosie every day when she was a student here—she’s funny, engaging, wonderfully quirky sometimes, and always upbeat and optimistic. Rosie is so much more than a great student. She will always be a trusted friend, a respected classmate, an admired leader. Her kindness to others was a treasure to be cherished as well as a catalyst for those around her (her teachers included) to try to be more kind as well. The world needs more people like Rosie Mazzotta, but until that happens, I’m glad I got to share time with her over the last four years. I wish her all the luck in the world and recommend her for this honor with total enthusiasm and confidence.
