Monica Dorner 360 Jenkins Rd. Tyrone, GA 30290 (770-969-2850) dorner.monica@fcboe.org 21 September 2023 To Whom it May Concern, This letter comes to you on behalf of Noa Lomba, one of the most accomplished and motivated seniors in the Sandy Creek High School class of 2024. I came to know Ms. Lomba when she was in my AP English Language and Composition class as a junior. During her time in my class, Ms. Lomba distinguished herself as a diligent and committed student with an ambition for success and the drive to achieve. As a result of her ambition and commitment, Ms. Lomba earned an A in AP English Language and passed the AP English Language exam. In the AP English Language classroom, Ms. Lomba was a diligent student, but the last to arrive each day because English followed science, her first love. I accepted her dedication to science because once she arrived in English, she committed herself completely to the cause. In discussions, Ms. Lomba would offer insightful observations and informed comments. She enjoyed our debates and contributed to them enthusiastically. As a classmate, she would encourage less engaged students to participate and help them when she could. As an English student, Ms. Lomba reads difficult texts with determination, and she works diligently to improve her writing. As a writer, Ms. Lomba is both accomplished, insightful, mature, and proactive. She is the first and only student, in my more than twenty years of teaching, who has completed all of her college application essays during her junior year. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Lomba is a well-rounded student leader. In addition to taking gifted, honors, and AP classes throughout her high school career, Ms. Lomba has established herself extracurricularly as well. She is the president of both the Beta Club and National Honor Society. She was a finalist for the Governor’s Honors Program in Science. She runs on our cross country team, where she serves as the co-captain, and where she has earned numerous recognitions for her contributions to her team and sport. She was a region winner and state finalist for National History Day. She even serves as a peer tutor. As a result of the aforementioned and many more unmentioned accolades and successes, Ms. Lomba is an asset to her school not only academically but also as a student leader. Beyond the school, Ms. Lomba is an engaged community member. She has been involved with the Pathfinder program for over four years as a teen leader and deputy in training. She takes pride in this pursuit because being a mentor has taught her to be a better listener and more empathetic to people whose circumstances are different from her own. And even though Pathfinders is a significant time commitment, Ms. Lomba has also found time to volunteer at the Midwest Food Pantry, where she has served over 288 hours making food packages, delivering food to people’s homes, and helping feed the community on Thanksgiving and Christmans holidays. In addition to her work at the food pantry, Ms. Lomba has also given time to help with community clean-up. And she has volunteered time with both Toys for Tots and the Royal Animal Refuge. Furthermore, when she isn’t volunteering or mentoring, Ms. Lomba maintains her own science blog where she writes about the latest scientific discoveries and inventions. With all of her qualities and commitments, I am confident that Ms. Lomba will achieve her goal of becoming an aerospace engineer. She is a well-rounded, conscientious, hard-working student who knows what she wants and how to go about getting it. She is an articulate young person who represents herself, her family, and her school with the character of a concerned, contributing citizen. In closing, I give this accomplished and inspirational young woman my highest recommendation. She will be an asset to any institution with which she chooses to associate herself, and she is an ideal candidate for the Ron Brown Program. Sincerely, Monica Dorner AP English Language English Department Chair
