October 18, 2023 To the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship Committee: I am writing this letter in support of Crisely Guzman’s application for the Georgia Engineering Foundation scholarship. Crisely was in my First-Year Odyssey Seminar at the University of Georgia this semester. Although I don’t know her well, I have been impressed with her performance in class. One of the requirements for the FYOS class is to attend three UGA-sponsored events and write a response paper describing the activity. I tell my students they can attend one sporting event and most write about going to their first football game as a freshman. All of Crisely’s events were more intellectually centered, going to multi-cultural and engineering events. She strikes me as a serious student focused on taking advantage of the opportunities presented to her at UGA. In reviewing her achievements in high school, it is evident that Crisely pushed herself to excel there as well. She took ten AP courses, graduating with a 4.274 weighted grade point average. She was involved in the National Honor Society, Beta Club, the National English Honor Society, the Georgia Thespian Society, and the National Honor Spanish Society. She was class president for two years among other activities. She is not only a first-generation student, but a first-American student as both of her parents immigrated from the Dominican Republic. I hope you will consider Crisely for your scholarship. I believe she is the type of student deserving of recognition. If you need more information, please contact me at 706-201-2267. Sincerely, Melissa Harshman Professor of Art Printmaking and Book Arts Department
