To whom it may concern: It is my great pleasure to recommend Samuel Byrd for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Samuel during his first semester at the University of Georgia. Samuel was selected to participate in the second cohort of a scholarship program at the University of Georgia, the First Year Scholars Program. As a member of the second cohort of scholars, Samuel has demonstrated strong leadership skills, worked cohesively in teams, presented quality communication skills, and learned to engage in the College of Engineering community. During his tenure in the program, Samuel has taken a proactive approach to assignments and participation in class. He doesn’t shy away from asking clarifying questions, contributing to class discussions, and making other students feel welcome to ask questions or share feedback. As part of the program, Samuel serves as a representative for underrepresented students pursuing engineering. This commitment to service and leadership does not go unnoticed. Samuel plans to pursue a Biological Engineering degree at UGA with a minor in Spanish to increase his breadth of impact on his communities. In addition to his leadership in the First Year Scholars Program, Samuel has taken the initiative to get involved in student clubs and organizations during his first semester. As a member of the National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Engineers Without Borders, Samuel is able to develop professionally and connect with peers with similar interests and backgrounds. As a member of professional societies, Samuel is empowered to take curriculum knowledge and apply that knowledge in co-curricular activities. He also had the opportunity to jump-start his connection to the College of Engineering through participation in a summer bridge program. During the program, Samuel had the opportunity to engage early with faculty, staff, and students and connect with representatives from Southern Company. Samuel Byrd would serve as a valuable representative for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. The scholarship would enable him to continue his mission of pursuing excellence in engineering with a mindset of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. I recommend him for this scholarship opportunity with the highest support. Samuel will be a great representative and steward of the University of Georgia and any organization he participates in. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need additional information. Sincerely, Amber Amber Juncker Director, Engagement & Recruitment College of Engineering 1156D Driftmier Engineering Center Athens, GA 30602 706-542-2744
