September 23, 2023 Georgia Engineering Foundation Attn: Scholarship Review Committee Harris Tower, Suite 700 233 Peachtree Street Atlanta, GA 30303 RE: Letter of Support for Ms. Kristy Lam for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarships Dear Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship Review Committee, With the strongest possible support, I recommend Kristy Lam for this year’s Georgia Engineering Foundation (GEF) Scholarship. I have only known Kristy since March 2023 when she applied for and was accepted into our prestigious First Year Scholars Program (FYSPS) within the College of Engineering at the University of Georgia. Since this time, I have become increasingly impressed by her engagement, dedication, and work ethic in our engineering program. Kristy is currently enrolled in my First Year Seminar: Engineering Exploration, Leadership, and Service this semester. The FYSP for which Kristy was selected supports students actively pursuing an engineering degree who demonstrate a financial need and an interest in promoting underrepresented and underserved groups in engineering. I recall Kristy’s application last spring when she discussed her desire to pursue a career in biological engineering. Given her involvement since high school in the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair and other STEM events coupled with the activities she is currently involved in at UGA, she is already seeking out and taking advantage of experiential learning opportunities to supplement her academic career. Her drive and determination so early on in her career have given me the greatest confidence that she will prosper in our program, continue to grow as an engineering student, and succeed as a future biological engineer. Kristy is a very detailed, bright, and determined student. My observations of Kristy are an individual who possesses the characteristics needed to be a successful engineer beyond graduation. While the practical application of engineering fundamentals is significant, the ability to work with, communicate with, and lead others is a concept we emphasize with our students. Based on my observations of Kristy, I am confident she exhibits these character traits and will make an excellent practicing engineer. I like to push my students both technically and professionally such that they can realize their potential and understand the need to continually seek out information and solutions to the problems they encounter. I have found Kristy to be extremely studious and conscientious about her work. I can tell that she spends a considerable amount of time making sure she understands the course material. Kristy is a fantastic candidate for GEF Scholarship and I strongly recommend her to you without reservation. If you have any additional questions, please contact me by phone at 706-542-9480 or by email at sdurham@uga.edu. Sincerely, Stephan A. Durham, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE Assistant Dean for Student Success and Outreach Professor
