September 21, 2023 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing you in regards to prospective Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship recipient applicant Hannah Olson. Hannah was a student of mine at Camden County High School in Kingsland, GA. She took both my Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles class and my Game Design class. I believe that she is a most deserving applicant for one of you scholarships. Let me start by saying that Hannah is an excellent student from an academic perspective. She embraced the rigor of our extremely abstract computer science classes with enthusiasm. She never shied away from difficult theories, and she would consistently seek to understand the intricacies of the mathematics and logic that underlie the programming concepts we covered. She is a high achiever and always completed her assignments quickly. Perhaps more importantly, Hannah is never one to seek the easy and/or obvious solutions to her work. In my classes, she would regularly work hard to implement the best version possible of her code. Her capabilities in my class and others display the qualities of a mature, talented student. Her responses on assignments and tests would consistently display a level of thoughtfulness and attention to detail. She would often notate her thoughts as she worked through various problems, illustrating not only that she can get the right answer, but also how she thought through a concept to arrive at her answer. She would regularly ask me thoughtful questions that indicate the deep level of understanding for which Hannah strives. I think it is this level of understanding, of not only the solution, but the process of getting to the solution, that is going to make Hannah a wonderfully competent engineer. Aside from her academic accomplishments, I can speak to Hannah’s character. She is very dedicated to her work, which allowed her to be ranked academically near the top of her class in high school. She has a caring nature, and I’ve never seen her speak negatively towards another person. She is very accepting and kind towards all of her peers, and she can converse with anyone she encounters. I’ve watched Hannah work well in various groups throughout her time in my classes. She can work with just about anyone and not in just a passive manner. She would consistently emerge as a leader and guide her group to produce projects that meet her own high expectations without alienating her peers. I’ve also seen her apply the same traits towards helping other students understand a concept with which they’ve been struggling. Given her wide range of technological, academic, and leadership skills, I think Hannah is the perfect candidate for one of your scholarships. I know she would be honored to receive it and would use any funds she receives as she continues to expand her engineering mindset and make herself an even better person and scholar. Sincerely, Johnna Lee Shelby, CTAE Department Camden County High School 6300 Laurel Island Parkway Kingsland, GA 31548
