September 15, 2023 Georgia Engineering Foundation Attn: Scholarship Review Committee Harris Tower, Suite 700 233 Peachtree Street Atlanta, GA 30303 RE: Letter of Support for Mr. Caden Taylor for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarships Dear Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship Review Committee, With the strongest possible support, I recommend Caden Taylor for this year’s Georgia Engineering Foundation (GEF) Scholarship. I have only known Caden since March 2023 when he applied for and was accepted into our prestigious first cohort of the University of Georgia College of Engineering’s First Year Scholars Program (FYSP); however, it is in this short time I have become extremely impressed by his dedication and work ethic in our engineering program. Caden is currently enrolled in my First Year Seminar: Engineering Exploration, Leadership, and Service this semester. The FYSP for which Caden was selected supports students actively pursuing an engineering degree who demonstrate a financial need and an interest in promoting underrepresented and underserved groups in engineering. I recall Caden’s application last spring when he discussed how engineering provided him a pathway for creating out of the box and unorthodox solutions to real-world problems and to ultimately help people. Additionally, he wrote about the need to promote diversity and inclusion that support opportunities within the engineering workplace; particularly in the field of computer systems/science. His writing and ideas were beyond that of a graduating high school student. Needless to say, I was very impressed! While this semester is nearly one-third complete, Caden has excelled in every assignment and tasks given to him. Caden is using much of what he envisioned and talked about from his FYSP application into his first major project – Engineering Exploration Presentation. Through this project, Caden is working effectively within a team to research his future profession and career opportunities as well as highlighting important historical figures in his discipline. Caden is a fantastic candidate for GEF Scholarship and I strongly recommend him to you without reservation. If you have any additional questions, please contact me by phone at 706-542-9480 or by email at sdurham@uga.edu. Sincerely, Stephan A. Durham, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE Assistant Dean for Student Success and Outreach Professor
