I am pleased to offer a letter of recommendation for Katie Wishert. I have served as her Girl Scout leader for over 7 years and I have known her for 10 years as a Girl Scout. I am honored to support her efforts to pursue college admission and scholarship availability. Girl Scouts is an organization that focuses on teaching girls to explore leadership, awareness, and community involvement. The Girl Scout mantra is set to cultivate a child’s courage, confidence, and character in order to make the world a better place. I have seen Katie exhibit these qualities each summer by volunteering as a camp counselor (PAL) at Northwoods Twilight Girl Scout Camp. Katie’s leadership, compassion, commitment, and hard work made her a huge asset to the camp. During what I believe was her most challenging summer camp experience and as the camp transitioned back after the pandemic, Katie maintained the utmost positive, professional, and humble attitude. The camp director shared some details with me; she said, “as a senior member of our PALS, Katie stepped up as a leader and adapted well to the unknowns of the camp. I found Katie to show a level of maturity needed to mentor and guide the younger campers throughout the week, and her calm demeanor served her team well during the initial chaos that was brewing within her team as they re- established the camp norms. She was picked as the PAL liaison because we needed someone from the rising senior team to communicate their needs, ideas, and/or issues with the adult PAL coordinators. I also loved that Katie stepped up and volunteered to play the trumpet at our opening and closing ceremony. This was truly a highlight of camp for me that I hope to make a tradition moving forward.” As many parents experience, middle and high school years are times when most girls leave Girl Scouts behind to explore other interests. However, Katie has persisted with Girl Scouting for 13 years. Through her long involvement in Girl Scouts, Katie has earned 3 very prestigious awards that directly impact her community. For each award, Katie identified a need in the community, and then developed a project that made an impact in that area of need. The first award earned was her Bronze Award. Her troop worked together on an anti-bullying campaign and aligned the project to fit the need of the school environment. The scope of their efforts is still in effect in 2022. The second award earned was her Silver Award. For her Silver Award, Katie and a fellow girl scout team member worked together to design and build a “buddy bench” for a local school. After many long nights and days, the bench was presented to the school with a theme to foster the need for inclusivity and kindness in the world. Katie was able to persevere and was able to tackle her final award, the Gold Award; which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Katie designed a monthly STEM night at a local Title 1 elementary school. Her goal was to facilitate family engagement with school programs and create a positive learning environment for students post-COVID. Katie’s efforts facilitated learning gaps in education and school engagement that were diminished during the pandemic. Each of these awards demonstrates Katie’s valuable contributions to her community. During Katie’s Girl Scouting years, she has continued to explore her many other talents, passions, and personal accomplishments, which include community leadership, community service, musical engagement, and her own physical well-being. Katie has also earned multiple awards and honors in and outside of her Girl Scouting experience. During her time in Girl Scouting, I have seen Katie cultivate unforgettable bonds with fellow Girl Scouts, hone in on her innate leadership ability, foster collaboration within the troop and in her community, address both current community and worldly issues with thought-provoking interventions and deliberation, and systematically identify resolutions in both grim and pleasant situations. Katie has been present, involved, and committed in all aspects of her Girl Scout troop and has made a significant impact in her community. Katie’s compassion and dedication are an inspiration to both her Girl Scout sister as well as other Girl Scouts she has been a role model and peer to throughout the years. I feel that Katie truly lives the Girl Scout Law by making the world a better place. It was a pleasure having Katie Wishert in my troop. I am honored to support her during this time because I know she will make a positive impact in the world. Jureen Oddo, RN, MSN Leader, Troop 11483 Roswell Service Unit Roswell, GA
