RE: Letter of Support for Ms. Sofia Mayfield for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarships Dear Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship Review Committee, With the strongest possible support, I recommend Sofia Mayfield for this year’s Georgia Engineering Foundation (GEF) Scholarship. I have only known Sofia since March 2022 when she applied for and was accepted into our prestigious first cohort of the University of Georgia College of Engineering’s First Year Scholars Program (FYSPS). Sofie is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree at UGA and is currently enrolled in my First Year Seminar: Engineering Exploration, Leadership, and Service this semester. I have been quite impressed with Sofia! I have found her to be determined, well informed, and very disciplined. In my opinion, the three best characteristics that most accurately describe Sofia are dedication, studious behavior, and personable qualities. In my opinion, she is most deserving of selection for a GEF scholarship this year. The FYSP for which Sofia was selected supports students actively pursuing an engineering degree who demonstrate a financial need and an interest in promoting underrepresented and underserved groups in engineering. My observations of Sofia thus far have led me to see an individual that is dedicated to her work, respectful to her peers, and possesses a desire to help others. Her approach to most every task she is faced with is to always look at the bigger, more global picture. I am confident that Sofia will continue to find ways to be impactful for her community and profession in future years. I have no doubt that Sofia will have great impact through her future endeavors within and beyond our programs at UGA. Sofia is truly exceptional and I will be excited to learn of all the wonderful things she accomplishes during her professional career. I have found Sofia to be very studious and conscientious about her work. She is always actively involved during my course lectures and routinely answers questions I ask during class. Sofia has been a natural leader for her project team in my class where she is leading her team to identify solutions that provide a more equitable and resilient infrastructure for underserved communities. Sofia is a fantastic candidate for GEF Scholarship and I strongly recommend her to you without reservation. If you have any additional questions, please contact me by phone at 706-542-9480 or by email at sdurham@uga.edu. Sincerely, Stephan A. Durham, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE Assistant Dean for Student Success and Outreach Professor
