RE: Letter of Support for Mr. Jordan Howard for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarships Dear Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship Review Committee, With the strongest possible support, I recommend Jordan Howard for this year’s Georgia Engineering Foundation (GEF) Scholarship. I have only known Jordan since March 2022 when he applied for and was accepted into our prestigious first cohort of the University of Georgia College of Engineering’s First Year Scholars Program (FYSP); however, it is in this short time I have become extremely impressed by his dedication and work ethic in our engineering program. Jordan is currently enrolled in my First Year Seminar: Engineering Exploration, Leadership, and Service this semester. The FYSP for which Jordan was selected supports students actively pursuing an engineering degree who demonstrate a financial need and an interest in promoting underrepresented and underserved groups in engineering. I recall Jordan’s application last spring when discussed how engineering provided him a pathway for creating out-of-the-box and unorthodox solutions to real-world problems. What also stood out in Jordan’s application was his desire to continue the family legacy of ‘firsts’ by becoming the first in his family to pursue an advanced graduate degree. Additionally, he wrote about the need to promote diversity and inclusion, communication, and opportunities within the engineering workplace; particularly in the field of electronics and computer systems/science. His writing and ideas were beyond that of a graduating high school student. Needless to say, I was very impressed! While this semester is over one-third complete, Jordan has excelled in every assignment and tasks given to him. I challenge my students to research and devise solutions to complex problems. One such project for which Jordan is working on currently is proposing solutions to equitable and resilient infrastructure. This project tasks students to work in teams of three to review the inequity in infrastructure, current infrastructure conditions, and climate change, link what currently exists between inequity and infrastructure, and propose solutions that provide more equitable and resilient infrastructure to underserved communities. Jordan is using much of what he envisioned and talked about from his FYSP application into this assignment with great ideas of how to plan and design more accessible and resilient infrastructure regardless of socio-economic or geographic conditions. Although Jordan only began at UGA in August, he has already become a member and actively engaged in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). His engagement at this level is promising and indicates potential for him to become a future leader of one or more of these organizations as he progresses through his program at UGA. Jordan is a fantastic candidate for GEF Scholarship and I strongly recommend him to you without reservation. If you have any additional questions, please contact me by phone at 706-542-9480 or by email at sdurham@uga.edu. Sincerely, Stephan A. Durham, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE Assistant Dean for Student Success and Outreach Professor
