RE: Letter of Support for Ms. Clara You for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarships Dear Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship Review Committee, With the strongest possible support, I recommend Clara You for this year’s Georgia Engineering Foundation (GEF) Scholarship. I have only known Clara since March 2022 when she applied for and was accepted into our prestigious first cohort of the University of Georgia College of Engineering’s First Year Scholars Program (FYSP); however, in this short time I have become extremely impressed by her personable skills, organization and work ethic, and dedication. Clara is currently enrolled in my First Year Seminar: Engineering Exploration, Leadership, and Service this semester. The FYSP for which Clara was selected supports students actively pursuing an engineering degree who demonstrate a financial need and an interest in promoting underrepresented and underserved groups in engineering. I recall Clara’s application last spring and how it stood out among all applications. Her views and comments within the application was well written and exhibited characteristics of a natural leader. While this semester is over one-third complete, Clara has excelled in every assignment and tasks given to her. I challenge my students to research and devise solutions to complex problems. One such project for which Clara is working on currently is proposing solutions to equitable and resilient infrastructure. This project tasks students to work in teams of three to review the inequity in infrastructure, current infrastructure conditions, and climate change, link what currently exists between inequity and infrastructure, and propose solutions that provide more equitable and resilient infrastructure to underserved communities. Clara has hit the ground running on this project by leading her team. Having seen her work on individual assignments, I definitely see her contributions to the successful development of this project. In addition, she often speaks up during class on lecture topics and contributes great ideas and questions to the discussion, a characteristic not often exhibited by first year students. I have been most impressed by Clara’s involvement in the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) and serving as the Freshman Chair of the latter. Clara has already begun attending organization meetings and contributing to the open discussion among the student members. This is impressive since she is only a freshman. Lastly, when you review her resume, you will see an individual who is highly involved, engaged, organized, and with a desire to take full advantage of the opportunities afforded to her. Clara is a fantastic candidate for GEF Scholarship and I strongly recommend her to you without reservation. If you have any additional questions, please contact me by phone at 706-542-9480 or by email at sdurham@uga.edu. Sincerely, Stephan A. Durham, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE Assistant Dean for Student Success and Outreach Professor
