It is my pleasure and honor to write to you today to highly recommend my engineering student, Nathan Morlu, be considered as a recipient of your scholarship program. For the last four years, I have had the pleasure of being his teacher and advisor while getting to watch him grow into one of our brightest students. Nathan shows the promise and drive to succeed in all his endeavors at the university level and beyond. Today’s competitive academic climate has required students to find means to distinguish themselves. As a 9th grader, Nathan enrolled in our specialty pre-engineering program, Project Lead the Way and took our class, Introduction to Engineering Design. He learned the preliminary principles of the design process, design briefs, prototyping, technical drawing, engineering teamwork, and how to use CAD as a 3D modeling tool. Nathan easily mastered each topic and challenged himself by going above and beyond. As a sophomore, he wanted to challenge himself and take our Civil Engineering and Architecture class. Here, Nathan learned all that it takes to design a structure, big or small, from the site selection to load calculations. He excelled in using the design software to make his work stand out. Junior year was unlike any other as the pandemic sent us all to virtual instruction. It was then that Nathan took our other weighted course, Principles of Engineering. Normally, he would be working in teams to test structures, calculate efficiency, or automate processes and document it all in lab reports. Nathan showed his ability to be a self-starter and perform all the labs using virtual tools with no prompting. Now, senior year has Nathan still pushing himself to take as many engineering classes as possible. He is in my Digital electronics class where he will learn how to design circuits, simplify them, simulate and prototype them. He also took our engineering capstone class, Engineering Design and Development. In this class, Nathan worked with two other seniors to create a solution to a real-world challenge. He will research, prototype, evaluate and present his teams finding to a board of industry for his final grade. End the end, the judges were impressed with the originality and complexity of their design. In Nathan, I see the qualities of leadership that will serve him well at university and beyond. Nathan having earned his Eagle Scout rank, has served as patrol leader, troop instructor, and finally senior patrol leader. He knows what it means to manage groups and organize events and outings. Within his congregation, Nathan participates in many of its ministries. From leading prayer groups to vacation bible school, he gives of himself as a testament of his faith. At Woodbridge, is a member of the school’s specialty program, Advance Placement Scholars as well as the National Honor Society. Nathan is an accomplished musician and member of the school’s specialty symphonic ensemble. He is a four-year member of the Woodbridge High Wrestling Team. Add to all that, Nathan has a passion for the environment and has served on the school’s ecology club and mentored the local middle school club. It is with all I have come to expect and know about Nathan that I ask you to seriously consider him for your scholarship program. You will be supporting a driven, focused, no-nonsense student who is serious about getting his mechanical engineering degree from Georgia Tech and beginning a career in engineering.
