Dear Sir or Madam: It is with great pleasure that I recommend Nathan Morlu for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. Nathan demonstrated tremendous effort and growth throughout the year I taught him and always brought a focused energy to class. His has a combination of a positive attitude and the belief that he can always improve, a rare quality in a high school student, but so essential to the learning process. I am confident that he will continue to display the same commitment and diligence in everything he does. Nathan did not describe himself as a physics person. He mentioned on several occasions that he couldn’t get his head around a physics problem. I smiled at this, because ultimately, he always found the solution on his own with only a faint hint of the direction in which he should think. Where so many others would have given up, Nathan reevaluated the situation, asked probing questions and tackled the problems with a new sense of understanding to complete the task. Nathan truly demonstrated a growth mindset, and he inspired his peers to adopt that valuable perspective as well. Nathan contributed to our classroom environment making it one where all students can feel supported and able to ask questions. Nathan’s ability to work with his peers is another trait that will help him succeed at the next level. Nathan is a leader during lab work. He helped his peers understand the lab questions and actively worked with his group members to execute the lab. Nathan took the ideas of his group and melded them with his own to produce high quality results. Nathan is not discouraged by initial poor lab results but used the errors to develop a better approach for more accurate data collection. Each lab we completed was another new adventure to him. They challenged his understanding and helped him to try new ways of both succeeding with the task and helping his group mates who did not quite understand it all yet. The lab work allowed him to use his creativity in experimental design and prior knowledge of the topic to develop effective procedures of investigation. He brought other students up to his level helping them gain a true understanding of the material. Nathan is an outstanding student and individual who supports others in and out of the classroom. He was a pleasure to have in class, and his positive attitude and belief in himself, even in the face of difficulty is an immensely admirable asset. I am confident that he will continue to demonstrate the same diligence, perseverance and optimism that he showed me and his peers. I give my highest recommendation for Nathan to receive your scholarship. Respectfully, Emily Griese Physics Teacher Woodbridge Senior High School grieseee@pwcs.edu 703-497-8000
