With this letter, it is my pleasure to recommend Teresa Anderson for this scholarship opportunity. As a teacher at Manhattan’s Dominican Academy, I have taught Teresa in two AP-level classes for two consecutive years, having had her in AP United States History during her junior year and currently in AP Psychology in her senior year. Through this, I have come to know Teresa as both an exceptionally bright and gifted thinker and a remarkably capable and accomplished scholar.
Dominican Academy, an all honors and AP-level college preparatory school for girls in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, sees no shortage of intelligent, talented, and well-rounded young women. Girls come from all over New York as capable freshmen and leave four years later as brilliant, motivated, and unstoppable scholars. Even amongst these bright minds, Teresa’s stands out. Teresa received an academic scholarship to attend our school, has obtained highest academic honors for four years straight and, in her senior year, was inducted into our National Honor Society as a testament to her achievement. She has also received countless accolades, awards, and nominations from a multitude of prestigious universities and programs for her efforts in almost all fields— ranging from STEM all the way to Latin. She has taken eight AP classes in her high school career (an exception to our maximum amount was allowed solely based on her ability), has been awarded the title of AP Scholar with Honors and was additionally offered placement in a College Board research program due to her high achievement on several AP exams. In addition to her academic achievements, Teresa is co-captain of the school’s soccer team and a varsity member of several other teams, is president of several school clubs and Assistant Art Editor for the yearbook, and volunteers countless hours to her school, church, and community. As if this were not enough, she works as a research assistant, has independently written and published multiple fan fiction novellas, and still manages to contribute to household chores and assist in caring for her younger brother. Even still, her incredibly diverse and accomplished resume is not enough to fully capture just how remarkable and distinguished Teresa truly is. In the classroom, she is an astute learner with a keen ability to absorb, synthesize, and apply new information. She sits upfront in each class and actively listens with eager anticipation and genuine interest in the material. As a gifted critical thinker, she also shows a marked ability to enrich classroom discussion by asking insightful questions and contributing dynamic viewpoints. In AP U.S. History, she would frequently ask questions well beyond the scope of the lesson and, in doing so, elevated the classroom discussion and environment as a whole. While most students might ask for clarification of a point or for repetition of a name or date, Teresa would ask questions that were well beyond the level of basic comprehension. No matter the subject, from history to science, Teresa shows a genuine love of learning and the markings of an incredibly gifted mind. My admiration of Teresa increased even further this year when she entered my AP Psychology class. Teresa has a passion for biology, psychology, and medicine and hopes to become a neurosurgeon one day. Given this, I knew that she would be a force of both knowledge and passion, but I was still impressed beyond what I had imagined. She shows an incredible interest and a great amount of foundational knowledge in the subject. She listens intently each day, with captivated eyes and an excited smile, and raises her hand promptly for each question. When nobody else knows the answer to a question, I look to Teresa and when her peers need clarification on a topic, they often ask her for the explanation. To no surprise, she has received a 100% on each assessment thus far. Given Teresa’s ability and accomplishment, it would surprise no-one if she were a little bit arrogant — she, understandably, would have every right to be. However, this is not the case to any degree. She is willing and eager to learn and shows nothing but respect and deference to her teachers. She is receptive to feedback and, in a way that is often times rare amongst young people, shows a distinct willingness to improve. In AP U.S. History, she attended every single evening review session throughout the year, despite the fact that these sessions were optional. In that same class, I could see concrete and measurable improvements in her essay writing each time she received feedback and, as a testament to her efforts, she ultimately scored a 5 on her exam. Wherever there is room for growth, Teresa will listen, reflect, and then apply any advice given in order to improve. She is receptive, affable, and sincere to her core. It is this combination of intelligence, drive, and authenticity both in the classroom and in society that makes Teresa a truly unstoppable force. She is by far one of the most impressive, yet well-rounded, young adults I have had the privilege of teaching. I have no doubt that she will go on to have an amazing impact in this world and I am confident that she will prove herself to be a fitting and worthy candidate. I am proud to endorse this student and recommend her with the strongest possible enthusiasm. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
