To the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship Committee: I am honored to write this letter of recommendation for Abigail Maddox as she applies for your distinguished scholarship. As a youth leader at Shirley Hills Baptist Church, I have known Abigail for more than six years. I have been acquainted with numerous teenagers over several decades of student ministry. Abigail is one that stands out due to her maturity, work ethic, authenticity, and friendly personality. As you can see from her high school coursework, Abigail’s academic record is exemplary. What does not show on her transcript is her exceptional character, her commitment to serve others, and her leadership skills. In our student ministry, Abigail is known for the example she lives out in view of her peers and younger youth. Abigail is a welcoming, caring individual to those who are on the edges or who often go unnoticed. I have worked with Abigail in a variety of settings. She has traveled on various missions trips working with children and adults in rural, multi-cultural, and urban environments. Abigail has been a volunteer in our local area as well, serving weekly at a food pantry, leading in Vacation Bible School during the summers, and conducting children’s programming at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coaches & Families camps. When our students are given opportunities to be engaged in the community, Abigail is always one of the first to volunteer whether that is serving residents at a nursing home, handing out meals to football teams at local high schools, or painting and doing yard work at a home for adults with disabilities. Abigail is a joy to be around and follows through with whatever assignment she is given. One of my fondest memories of Abigail involves our spring break mission trip to Panama City Beach, Florida. We were helping with clean up after a hurricane had wreaked havoc in the area. We had already been to two other homes that day removing debris and encouraging homeowners. By the time we were at the third house, the team was tired, hot, and ready to be done for the day. Not Abigail. I’m sure she was tired too, but she was determined to get the work done. I looked over to see her and another girl working hard removing fallen tree limbs and cleaning up the homeowner’s lot. This is indicative of who Abigail is. I will say that Abigail is strong in lots of ways—mentally, emotionally, and physically. She is not afraid of hard work or opportunities because they seem difficult or demanding. I know that Abigail enjoys working with her hands and problem solving. She has taken advantage of STEM camps at our local Air Force Base, shadowed a materials tester, and has placed in robotics competitions. She has been future-focused in her preparation, and she has been affirmed in her passion for engineering. Abigail thrives in the areas of math and logic, and she has the skill set needed to be an excellent engineer. She is a well-rounded individual who exudes hope and determination in her generation. I ask you to please consider this young woman to be a worthy recipient of your scholarship, and it is with great confidence, that I recommend her to you. Kindest regards, Malea S. Glenn 478-258-4315
