To Whom it May Concern: I am so glad to have been asked to write a letter of recommendation for JT Hinson for the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. JT was a student in Paulding County High School’s Academy of Science, Research, and Medicine, which is a testament to his drive and ability to succeed. As a student in this magnet program, he took the most rigorous classes our school has to offer, and he worked his way through them successfully. I had the pleasure of teaching JT in my AP English Language and Composition class, which he took as a high school sophomore, and then again in my Writer’s Workshop, which he took as a senior. JT is not only a pleasure to work with; he is hard working, driven, and dependable, which has served him well and made him successful in his endeavors both in and out of school. He deliberately seeks out and uses constructive criticism in order to grow, especially in his writing. The writing in AP Language is very different from the literary analysis students become accustomed to in the standard literature class, where the focus is on literary analysis. AP Language focuses on rhetoric and rhetorical analysis, and I was so pleased to watch JT grow in his ability to pick apart arguments and use rhetorical techniques in his own argument essays. In Writer’s Workshop, JT had to perhaps work even harder, as the literal nature of his thinking made writing narrative and poetry more difficult than writing argument and analysis was. But he pushed through, and while I can’t promise he enjoyed the class, he did try his best on every assignment and could be depended on to work dutifully and thoughtfully. In addition to being a successful student, JT was also a member of the band, including marching band, where he was the baritone section leader, tasked with leading and teaching the low brass section. He was also inducted into the National Honor Society his junior year, where he performed community service, such as making Valentine’s cards for hospice patients. These things show that JT is a well-rounded individual, in addition to being a very successful student. JT is an excellent student, working hard for his own success, pushing onward with self-reliance and confidence. He is the type of student who will go far both in and out of college and the working world, and I whole-heartedly recommend him for your scholarship. If you have any further questions or concerns, I can be reached at anero@paulding.k12.ga.us. Thank you for your time and consideration! Sincerely, Anna Nero-Self English Teacher Paulding County High School
