I highly recommend Rylie Rowland as an excellent candidate for a Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. Rylie is an outstanding young man that I have had the joy to get to know over the last 4 years as his 4-H agent. Throughout his 4-H career, he has exhibited projects at county and state fairs, competed in the Sports project at District Project Achievement, and developed his leadership and citizenship skills by leading community service projects in our community that combat food insecurity. More important than being an active 4-H member, Rylie is a leader and role model for his peers as well as younger students. As a Georgia 4-H Certified Teen Leader, he has served in leadership roles assisting with younger 4-H’ers including leading and assisting with classes and workshops both with 4-H and in the community. He has recently completed his term as a Georgia 4-H Healthy Living Ambassador and through that experience, was able to educate himself and members of our community on healthy habits, food insecurity, and mental health. He was one of six Georgia youth selected to participate in the National Youth Summit on Healthy Living, and through that experience, was awarded a mini-grant to address a food insecurity issue in our local community. I worked with Rylie to assemble 75 healthy breakfast kits that were distributed to students in need at East Georgia State College. Rylie’s Leadership in Action Project is in its third year and last year alone collected over 6,300 food items and approximately $650 for the food pantry at Hawhammock Baptist Church. He also volunteers regularly helping to restock shelves and assist clients with bagging and loading their groceries. Combatting food insecurity in our community has become a passion for him and he is meeting this challenge head-on. It is my opinion that Rylie Rowland is the type of youth that GEF should be looking to reward: he is an exceptional young man with a passion for service, leadership and citizenship. Most importantly, these qualities are put into action with his family, school, and community on a daily basis. Thank you for the opportunity to share with you why I feel that Rylie is most deserving of this award.
