September 10, 2021 Dear Scholarship Selection Committee, I had the good fortune of meeting Alexis Arredondo when he was a high school freshman. As President of the Cartersville Schools Foundation, I was interviewing students who had been nominated to participate in our GateKey Scholarship program. This is a highly competitive, needs-based scholarship program for high achieving students. As soon as Alexis entered the room, I could tell there was something special about him. It was immediately evident that Alexis was mature, articulate, smart, and humble. Of course, Alexis was one of only a few selected. All GateKey students are mentored throughout high school to prepare them for college success. Alexis spent many hours in my office over the past four years allowing me to get to know him extremely well. He has always maintained a high GPA, has been involved in extracurricular activities, found opportunities to volunteer in the community all while working several hours each week. He excels in math and science and took the most rigorous courses available. He also took three years of engineering courses. Many students fit this description, however, it is Alexis’ personality and character that set him apart. Every teacher he has had will tell you he is a teachers dream. Alexis Arredondo is not one to talk about himself, rather, he questions others about what they think about issues and how things are in their life. One day he came into my office and went straight to the white board and wrote, “I want to be known not as the smartest in class, but as the hardest worker in class.” As other students would come in, he would take them to the board and talk to them about the idea. Alexis is definitely known as a hard worker, always giving his best to everything he does and always moving forward. We have had many discussions about college and career goals over the past four years, and from day one, Alexis has said he would be an engineer. Even beginning his college career this year at Georgia Highlands, each course was selected knowing he would be transferring to Georgia Tech for his sophomore year where he already has an acceptance for the Fall of 2022. While coming from a hard-working family, money is tight, and Alexis has always worked to contribute to the household. He has been strategic in financially planning for college and chose to begin at Georgia Highlands to reduce the cost of core classes. Alexis is very deserving of the Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship. He works hard, sets and reaches goals, and will enjoy a very successful career in the future. You would be very proud that you selected him. Sincerely, Lisa Bell, President Cartersville Schools Foundation, Inc. 770-387-4710
