September 25, 2022 North Gwinnett High School has achieved a standard of academic excellence that ranks among the foremost in America and has been identified as such by US News and World Report. Our mathematics department has imposed a rigorous course of study affording all our students an opportunity to take Calculus before graduating from high school. We have had graduates continue their education in well-respected institutions across the country including the Harvard, Duke, Emory and Georgia Tech. Due to the academic opportunities available, our students are expected to participate in the AP program offered. Lonnie Francis White has availed himself of these opportunities. By the end of his junior year of high school, he had taken several AP courses in various subjects, performing exceptionally well in all, while participating on the Cross Country Team, Swim Team and the Track and Field Team. He enrolled in our AP Calculus AB course as a junior which is one of the most rigorous courses of mathematics we offer at the high school level and did an excellent job asking questions, working with classmates and looking for deeper understanding, earning the designation AP scholar with distinction. He is continuing his mathematics coursework his senior year taking Advanced Calculus II. During his year in Calculus, I found Lonnie to have a positive attitude and a contagious curiosity. Dependable, compassionate, diligent and self-motivated are adjectives that describe him. When he encountered a challenge, he worked harder to overcome it. It was common for Lonnie to work with other students discussing Calculus and helping them understand. He actively participated in class discussions, has the ability to focus his efforts for long periods of time and is passionate about whatever he is studying. Lonnie approached problem solving in a different way from most students his age. He makes connections between concepts easily and can understands how the concepts in mathematics will support what he already knows in his science courses. It is evident that he researches topics in mathematics and science that are not present in the standard high school curriculum, applying these concepts to current material. Of equal importance is the expectation that our students develop their leadership qualities by taking an active role within the various clubs and organizations offered here. Lonnie has been an integral part of the North Gwinnett culture. He has been not only a peer leader but also a freshman mentor, helping the incoming freshman acclimate to the high school culture. He is on the Executive Board for the NGHS Relay for Life team, giving him an opportunity to not only increase membership in the organization but also raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Regardless of the activity in which he participates, Lonnie takes a proactive approach rather than having someone else lead the way. With twenty-nine years of teaching experience at the high school level, nineteen years of experience teaching AP Calculus, I have had students graduate from US Naval Academy, UC Berkley, Harvard and many other schools throughout the country. Many have continued their graduate studies at Columbia University, Johns Hopkins, Emory University and such. Therefore, I feel well qualified to recommend this truly outstanding and caring scholar to you without any reservations and feel confident that he will establish himself as one of your most significant scholars as he has here at North Gwinnett High School. Respectfully, Carolyn J. Renner AP Calculus teacher
